Robert Claus collection, 1899-1974.

The Robert Claus Collection consists primarily of correspondence and financial records for the Sargent & Pinska / Martin A. Pinska menswear store of Dawson City, Yukon Territory (1899-1918), and Fairbanks, Alaska (1904-1974). Though written for business purposes, the correspondence includes much local news, especially concerning Fairbanks, for the period 1905-1922. The collection also contains small quantities of records concerning: the Bedrock Mining and Milling Company (Alaska) and mineral claims in Alaska and Yukon Territory in which Charles Sargent, Martin Pinska, Dawson store manager Albert Pinska, and/or Fairbanks store manager George Hunter were involved; Alaskan mineral claims for which connections with the Pinska store are not clear; and the Arctic Brotherhood. In addition, it contains letters and financial records of Mrs. Mary Anderson, whose Fairbanks affairs were managed by George Hunter while she sought medical treatment in Seattle; assorted papers of Halsey D. Fountain, a Fairbanks businessman; and 130 photographs of people (some identified), the Dawson and Fairbanks Pinska stores, and various places in Alaska.
